KUANTAN: A stunning bioluminescent phenomenon has drawn large crowds to Pantai Tembeling here as visitors flock to catch a glimpse of its unique glowing waves. Social media has been abuzz with images of the natural spectacle, which causes stretches of the shoreline to appear luminous due to bioluminescent plankton in the water.
Over the past week, large crowds have gathered at the beach to experience and capture the sparkling waves, sharing videos and images of water glistening like stars in the night sky. Tourism Pahang took to Facebook to promote the 'blue tears phenomenon', describing it as a spectacle that transforms the nighttime scenery into something truly magical with its natural blue glow produced by microscopic marine organisms.
"Have you ever witnessed a glowing ocean at night? The mesmerising phenomenon of bioluminescence has now been reported near Tembeling Beach, Kuantan. "If you have the opportunity to witness this phenomenon, appreciate this natural wonder by helping to keep the beach clean and protect the surrounding ecosystem," it wrote on Facebook.
Bioluminescence is a natural process where plankton produce and emit light when disturbed by movement, causing the water to appear to glow - often with an electric blue hue - especially at night. Pantai Tembeling has emerged as a new hotspot for sightings, joining other popular locations such as Kuala Selangor, Pulau Sembilan and Bagan Datuk in Perak, as well as Miri in Sarawak. The unique phenomenon here has prompted netizens to share images on social media, with some saying the surge in visitors has been a blessing for traders operating near the beach, allowing them to extend their business hours until the early hours of the morning.
